ASP WQS Situation Room

For the second time in the history of the women’s tour, an event had to be cancelled without a winner. That’s twice in 535 events for the girls, and in the men, it has happened ten times in their 1367 events from 1976 to now.

Way back in 1998, at the Lacanau Pro in France, was the first time for the girls, and now this week, at the Mr Price Pro Ballito in South Africa.

Why? Huge waves on Saturday meant delaying the start until Sunday, which started off in great six-foot surf, but unfortunately, around midday the wind came in and conditions became unridable again. With four heats still to run in the Round of 48, decisions were needed and finally it was decided that the final four heats of the round would be run the following morning so that at least the round would be completed.

Unfortunately, due to some of the surfers having to fly out early Monday to hook up with planned boat trips or having unchangeable airline tickets, no other heats could be run. The end result, the remaining 24 surfers all received =19th points of 1200 and $1,000 each as they shared all remaining prize money.

On the ratings, the Top 10 remain similar as they all ended up with 1200 points, but below this, some surfers made good advancements like Bethany Hamilton from 25th to 20th.

The men’s division is in the water with the first Round heats 1-16 being completed today in 4-6 feet windy conditions so no change in their ratings since the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Cape Town over a week ago.

Upcoming longboard events, the Roxy ASP World Longboard Titles in France next week and the Oxbow ASP World Longboard Titles first of two events in Japan in two weeks have a huge roll up the top longboarders in the world.

At the Roxy ASP WLT, the 32-girl field is headed up by defending ASP Women’s World Longboard Champ Joy Monaghan and all last years final 16 except one have confirmed their entry.

For the Oxbow ASP WLT in Japan, all Top 16 have confirmed their attendance for the first event of their two event series to decide the ASP World Longboard Title. The second event will be in late September in the Maldives.
